How Wallpaper is Made

Have you ever wondered why some wallpaper is more expensive than others? It usually comes down to two reasons. How and what it is made of and who creates the design. The more unique the pattern and time it takes will make a difference in price. Vinyl and vinyl coated wallpapers are less expensive, more durable and easier to install. Wallpapers with a special finish such as flock, foil or grasscloth tend to be more expensive due to the labor and materials it takes to make them. Did you know real grasscloth is made from hand-woven strands of natural fibers on an unpasted rice paper backing? Also, if a specific designer creates a wallpaper pattern it could cost more for the style and unique pattern they come up with. Check out the video above to see how Schumacher's Citrus Garden is made. This process is called hand blocking. Recently, Patrick and I had the privilege of visiting a wallpaper manufacturing company located in the US. Check out our pictures of vinyl coated wallpaper being produce compared to Schumacher's hand blocking video.

The Citrus Garden pattern is based on an archival 1947 Josef Frank print. You can see the designer's unique style in his hand-drawn pattern. This pattern is also available as a fabric including an indoor/outdoor option.
